Why choose Art as a GCSE subject?

What does the course involve?

GCSE Art followes the same general guide line as the Entry Level qualification you are currently undertaking, you already know a lot about how the course will run:

Over the two years you will complete four units of work, possibly gaining two GSCE's in Art and Design.

A unit consists of: observation work,
                             artist reference work,
                              design and experimentation ideas,
                              the final outcome.

A wide range of materials can and will be used!

Year 10 Sept to Christmas: Unit 1 - Masks: Research and ivestagtion followed by design and ceramic production of your own mask in clay. Homework set once a week to include research, observation and evaluation.

Unit 2 Jan to Easter: Personal choose:

You select the theme -

And you select the artist:

You develop your ideas towards a final outcome.

Easter - Summer:

Skills workshop; experimenting with materials and exploring ideas for Unit 3: Setember - Xmas and finishing with the exam unit from Xmas to Easter

Homework:

The same as Year 9, homework is set once a week. Home work involves research tasks, observation tasks and evaluation.

All homework is set to support the work you complete in lessons - not for the sake of it!

Assessment:

Assessment is on-going as the work develops. I will advise and support throughout, final written assessmnets are completed at the end of each unit.

Support:

Access to me and the Art department before, during and after school, use of our ICT equipment, support through the blog, Art resources and books.

Exam:

The final exam is a development of a unit of work within a set time scale, 6-8 weeks, and the production of that piece in exam conditions over two school days.

By the time this happens you will be confident in your choosen style and work and preferred materials.

If you have managed/could manage, your home works well

If your prepared to be an individual

Art Vocabulary

Tone=light or dark in monchrome or colour - makes anything have form - look real

Highlight=the place on the object that receives the most direct light from the source.

Half-Tones=the place on the object that receives light from the light source.

Core Shadow=where the object receives the least amount of light because those parts of the object are on the opposite side from the light.

Reflected Light=light bouncing up onto the back side of the object from the surface the object is sitting on.

Cast Shadow=the area behind the object where the light is blocked by the object. The cast shadow is always darkest directly below the object.

Tessellation=a collection of shapes thta fit together with no overlaps or gaps

Optical Illusion=an image that deceives a person, leading to a misinterpretation of its meaning.

Vertical=perpendicular to the horizon line

Horizontal=parallel to the horizon line

Parallel=never intersects

Perpendicular=intersects at a right angle

Horizon Line=where sky and land meet.

Vanishing Point=the spot (usually on the horizon line) where objects dissappear

bird's eye view=seen from above
normal eye view=looking at it straight on
worm's eye view=seen from below

Transparent=completely see through (like regular glass).

Translucent=only light can travel through (like a privacy glass).

Opaque=not see through (like a wall).

Slip=clay and water mixed to make "glue".

Score=to cut

Form Follows Function=function (what it's used for) has to be designed first, then form (shape) can be designed.

Primary=1st. The primary colours are red, yellow, and blue.

Secondary=2nd. The secondary colours are orange, green, and violet.

Tertiary=3rd. The tertiary colours are yellow-orange, red-orange, red-violet, blue-violet, blue-green, and yellow-green.

Neutral=does not choose sides. Brown, black, and white.

Hue=pure colour

Tint=a hue with white mixed in.

Shade=a hue with black mixed in.

Complimentary=colours opposite on the wheel. An exciting scheme.

Analogous=colours next to each other on the wheel. A calm scheme.

Triadic=triangle of colours on the wheel. A very balanced scheme

Monochromatic=one colour. Shows lack of emotions

Negative Space=the shapes made by the space around an object.

Elements of Art=The basic building blocks of art. They are 1. Shape 2. Line 3. Colour 4. Texture 5. Value 6. Space 7. Form

Blocking in=Starting a drawing with simple shapes.

Portfolio= A file or folder to keep work in over time.
