One of our Year 9 students is poorly at the moment so they are completing their Art work at home.
This is a guide to help them with their clay work.
To make a Green Man:
These are all the materials you need plus cling film and newspaper.
Roll out a good sized slab of clay onto the hessian mat, always roll clay out from the middle.
Get the slab of clay about a centimetre thick. Get two lenghts of cling film to cover the slab. Place them on really loosely as you'll be stretching the clay in the mould so the cling film needs to be able to give as well.
Place over the centre of the slab the face mould. Turn the hessian mat over, holding the mould and start pressing the clay into the mould.
Be sure to press right into the mould, pushing out the facial features especially the nose.
When you think its done roll up newspaper and put into the back of the mould. Get your board with a piece of newspaper on it and place on the back and flip over.
Take off the mould and cling film to reveal the face. If any sections are not fully formed wrap it back up and try again.
Trim the clay to fit the board and then roll out the left over clay a little thinner. Cut these out into leaf shapes. Pinch the edges to make them look even finer.
Score and slip any where you are going to join bits of clay together. Make slip by wetting down the clay with water to a muddy mess!
Think about layering up the leaves and working with different scales and shapes of leaves.
