Art@Sundorne: Year 5's are visiting today and

the one thing students always want to do is to be able to draw, they either think they can or they can't. I want to teach them today that drawing can be learnt by careful looking and I'm going to use these two characters to help me!

Art Vocabulary

Tone=light or dark in monchrome or colour - makes anything have form - look real

Highlight=the place on the object that receives the most direct light from the source.

Half-Tones=the place on the object that receives light from the light source.

Core Shadow=where the object receives the least amount of light because those parts of the object are on the opposite side from the light.

Reflected Light=light bouncing up onto the back side of the object from the surface the object is sitting on.

Cast Shadow=the area behind the object where the light is blocked by the object. The cast shadow is always darkest directly below the object.

Tessellation=a collection of shapes thta fit together with no overlaps or gaps

Optical Illusion=an image that deceives a person, leading to a misinterpretation of its meaning.

Vertical=perpendicular to the horizon line

Horizontal=parallel to the horizon line

Parallel=never intersects

Perpendicular=intersects at a right angle

Horizon Line=where sky and land meet.

Vanishing Point=the spot (usually on the horizon line) where objects dissappear

bird's eye view=seen from above
normal eye view=looking at it straight on
worm's eye view=seen from below

Transparent=completely see through (like regular glass).

Translucent=only light can travel through (like a privacy glass).

Opaque=not see through (like a wall).

Slip=clay and water mixed to make "glue".

Score=to cut

Form Follows Function=function (what it's used for) has to be designed first, then form (shape) can be designed.

Primary=1st. The primary colours are red, yellow, and blue.

Secondary=2nd. The secondary colours are orange, green, and violet.

Tertiary=3rd. The tertiary colours are yellow-orange, red-orange, red-violet, blue-violet, blue-green, and yellow-green.

Neutral=does not choose sides. Brown, black, and white.

Hue=pure colour

Tint=a hue with white mixed in.

Shade=a hue with black mixed in.

Complimentary=colours opposite on the wheel. An exciting scheme.

Analogous=colours next to each other on the wheel. A calm scheme.

Triadic=triangle of colours on the wheel. A very balanced scheme

Monochromatic=one colour. Shows lack of emotions

Negative Space=the shapes made by the space around an object.

Elements of Art=The basic building blocks of art. They are 1. Shape 2. Line 3. Colour 4. Texture 5. Value 6. Space 7. Form

Blocking in=Starting a drawing with simple shapes.

Portfolio= A file or folder to keep work in over time.
